The Admission Five-Step Process

Step 1: Tour the School

Step 2: Submit Application

Complete the admission application form and send it to the Admission Office along with:

  • $500 application deposit

  • Copy of your child’s birth certificate

  • Immunization record

  • Photograph of your child

Step 3: Interview

A personal interview is required for all those who submit an application, regardless of grade level. Parents will be contacted to arrange an individual appointment with the Director of Admission. This is an opportunity for us to get to know each family more personally.

Step 4: Assessment

Our in-house assessments will consist of grade appropriate activities with a school administrator. All information collected will be shared with the Director of Admission during the admission process.

Kindergarten: Informal playgroups are held in the Kindergarten classrooms. Children enjoy a story and some play time in a small group with one of our Preschool teachers.

Grade 1: Grade 1 assessments are held individually. We will conduct an informal assessment in math and language, observe indicators of social/emotional development and attention and listening skills. This will include a classroom visit in the child’s current grade.

Grade 2 – Grade 8 (The following steps must occur, but in no particular order):
1) A visit with a school administrator to determine if the school is the right fit in order to build the student for success, including a classroom visit in the child’s current grade.
2) An assessment by JVS. This is a psycho-educational screening which provides us with pertinent information to ensure we are able to accommodate and meet the academic and social/emotional needs of every student. The cost to the family is $400, and the school subsidizes the remainder of the fee.
3) A Hebrew assessment with the Hebrew Coordinator in order to assess Hebrew language level.
4) Signed consent for The Leo Baeck Day School to contact your child’s current and/or previous school(s). 

Step 5: Notification

Acceptance letters are sent out during the year prior to entry. Our wait pool remains in effect until September 1st, immediately prior to school opening. All deposits are fully refundable if we cannot accommodate you by September 1st. As an admission-based school, The Leo Baeck Day School reserves the right to deny an offer of acceptance at any point during the admission process.

OTHER FEES

Building Fund Levy: The building fund levy is calculated as half of the student’s initial tuition upon entry at The Leo Baeck Day School into Senior Kindergarten (or any higher grade), payable over five years. A 25% credit is offered to parents who choose to pay their full five year commitment in one initial payment. This credit is offered only in the first year that the levy is applicable. Regardless of payment plan, the levy is 100% tax receiptable in the year(s) it is paid.

Non Affiliation: The Board of Directors of The Leo Baeck Day School recognizes the importance of synagogue affiliation in the life of the Jewish family. Families who choose not to affiliate are required to pay a tuition surcharge of $1,000 per child per year. We understand the financial burden that synagogue membership may entail; the non-affiliation surcharge is allocated to the School’s tuition assistance program. The Board has defined a synagogue as “an organization which provides the opportunity for regular worship and a venue for life cycle events, facilitating participation in Jewish spiritual and communal life.” It is ultimately the responsibility of the family to provide proof of synagogue affiliation.

Trips and Special Events: $70 per child (all grades). This fee includes the cost of transportation and other associated costs for special outings for the entire school year.

Parents’ Association Dues: $18 per family. These dues will be remitted to the Parents’ Association for its use to augment the educational experience of our children through special programs and purchases.

Family Surcharge: $50 per family (grades 1-8). If you have children attending any other Jewish Day School in Toronto which has a similar family surcharge, please prorate the $50 amongst the schools.

TERMS OF PAYMENT

There are two payment options, either can be paid through post dated cheque or preauthorized payments:

1. Three (3) instalments, dated July 1, September 1 and November 1, 2017.

2. Ten (10) instalments, dated the first of each month from July 1, 2017 to April 1, 2018. This option includes a monthly charge of $22.50 per student for handling and lost interest revenue.

Please note that agreements received after May 1, 2017 will be charged a $100 late filing fee.

NO REFUND POLICY

The school makes commitments based on enrolment and these commitments cannot be altered due to withdrawals of students. It is the policy of The Leo Baeck Day School that where a student is unilaterally absent or withdrawn from the school at any point following the due date for the first tuition payment, which is July 1st, tuition payments may be refundable on a monthly pro-rated basis. However, all deposits and other fees are non-refundable. In addition, a fee of $500 per child will be retained by the school as a processing fee. As an educational institution, the school reserves the discretionary right to require the withdrawal of any student at any time; in such cases unused tuition will be refunded, but all other fees are non-refundable.

THE CREDIT AND COLLECTION POLICY OF THE LEO BAECK DAY SCHOOL

It is the policy of the Board of Directors of The Leo Baeck Day School that family accounts be kept current. The administration, with the guidance of the Finance and Audit Committee, has a responsibility to ensure that this policy is carried out. The Board of Directors has approved the schedule of tuition and fee payments as set in the Tuition Agreement. Please note the following collection policies:

1. There is a $25 service charge for the return of any bank or pre-authorized cheque as “noncollectible.” If you change banks or close your account, please make alternative arrangements with the school to avoid this charge.

2. All outstanding amounts will bear interest of 1.5% per month.

3. Monthly payments must be in good standing by December 1, 2017 in order to retain the student’s place. Monthly payments must be in good standing by April 1, 2018 in order to retain the student’s place for the next school year.

TUITION ASSISTANCE

The Leo Baeck Day School offers tuition assistance to families who are unable to pay the entirety of the fees charged for tuition by our school. We are able to provide assistance for students in Grades 1-8 in large part due to the availability of community funds shared by all Jewish day and supplementary schools which are administered by the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.  As a result, our tuition assistance program for those grades is run in accordance with UJA Federation guidelines. We are pleased that beyond the tuition assistance supported by the UJA Federation, The Leo Baeck Day School also offers tuition assistance to families of children enrolled in full-day school within our preschool. This extension of the tuition assistance program is administered within the school’s ability to meet such funding. Click here to download the Tuition Assistance application form for the 2017-18/5778 school year.  New for this year is a Simplified application for families whose income is comprised almost exclusively from income documented by a third party T4 (not a family business). Any questions may be directed to our confidential email address at tuitionassistance@leobaeck.ca. For families applying for 2017-18/5778 Tuition Assistance, the deadline for application submission is Monday, May 1, 2017. Only fully complete applications with all supporting documents will be accepted. PLEASE NOTE: any applications filed late, including those applications that are filed on time but remain incomplete until after the deadline, will be charged a late fee.

Busing

SOUTH CAMPUS

Leo Baeck’s South Campus offers a daily school bus service in cooperation with the Fun Bus, a privately operated door-to-door service that offers one-way and round-trip options. It is a reliable, family-friendly service that works directly with you. Availability of service is dependent on location and space. NORTH CAMPUS

Leo Baeck’s North Campus offers several busing options. Depot busing is offered from Leo Baeck’s current location at 9600 Bathurst, Yonge & Sheppard and Bathurst & Sheppard. Before & After Care

BEFORE CARE

Before school care is available at no extra cost. Children are supervised in the gymnasium by a qualified teacher.

South Campus Hours
7:45am until the start of school (8:30am for JK-5 and 8:15am for Grades 6-8)

North Campus Hours
7:30am until the start of school (8:30am for JK-5 and 8:15am for Grades 6-8)

AFTER CARE 

After school care is available and is run by qualified teachers in a fun, safe environment for your child.

South Campus Hours
3:30-6:00pm Monday-Friday (ends at 5:45 on Fridays)

North Campus Hours
3:30-6:00pm Monday-Friday

Cost
$10 per day per student. 

On early dismissal days, after care is available and runs from the end of the day until 6:00pm (5:45 on Fridays) as per usual.
On days where the school closes early for a Jewish holiday there is no after care available.
