Leo Baeck and the Community Honour a Hero

Leo Baeck played host to a stirring ceremony bringing the Portuguese and Jewish communities together to honour a hero when the City of Toronto named the newly renovated playground in the Arlington Parkette, in memory of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. He was a Portuguese during WWII who risked his life to save 30,000 refugees, over a third of them Jews.

In a ceremony that included the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Sousa Mendes, LB North students Kayla Saul and Allie Silcoff sang Hatikvah and shared in the honour of singing O Canada. LB parent/UJA Federation rep Micki Mizrahi also spoke. Following that, Head of School Eric Petersiel introduced a screening of the film "Disobedience", about the brave actions of Sousa Mendes, screened inside Leo Baeck South.

Leo Baeck Hosts Third Annual Jewish Day School Debating Tournament

Both campuses of Leo Baeck fielded teams at the third annual Jewish Middle School Debate Tournament on Wednesday, April 17. It was hosted by our South Campus. In its third year, the tournament was bigger than ever. What began three years ago as a debating contest between Grade 6-8 students from three schools has gained traction and has grown to a six-school competition.

The participating Jewish day schools include Associated Hebrew Schools (Danilack campus), Bialik, Heschel, both North and South campuses of The Leo Baeck Day School, and Robbins Hebrew Academy.

The final round was won by Robbins Hebrew Academy, facing off against Heschel School. That was the culmination of a day of preliminary rounds in which each school's teams debated vigourously and persuasively.

Intermural debating competition presents an opportunity for academic interaction among fellow Jewish day schools, adding an intellectual dimension to the already existing friendly exchanges afforded by the day school athletic leagues.

“Outside of athletics, nowadays, the opportunities for schools to meet up and get to know each other on a personal and academic level are few and far between,” says Eli Savage, a Leo Baeck Middle School teacher who initiated the tournament.

“Debating is such a crucial skill, given the rise of technology and less and less opportunity for face to face communication,” adds Savage.

“Underlying all of this is a sense that this tournament is an experience more than a competition and a reinforcement that our students are part of one Jewish community.”

Organizers intend to further expand the debating tournament next year to include even more schools and in future years to other cities in Canada and North America.

The Jewish Day School Debate Tournament will consist of two preliminary rounds of debates followed by the championship round.

Date: Wednesday, April 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Justin Trudeau

The son of former Canadian PM Pierre Trudeau paid a visit to our South Campus. In the IB spirit of presenting multiple perspectives, Justin Trudeau offered students, faculty and families his view of the virtues of Tikkun Olam, the Jewish notion of Repairing the World.
